The 10th Annual Conference of the Ukrainian Internet Association (UIA) and UA-IX Traffic Exchange Network was held from May 28 through June 1, 2009 in Sudak (Crimea). The event was dedicated to burning issues that concern the development of information and communication technologies in Ukraine.

Vasil Kisil & Partners Law Firm, which has recently become an active member of UIA, was represented by Oleksandr Mamunya, the firm's Senior IP Associate.
This year the event that annually brings together key- players of telecom industry was attended by more than 100 people representing approximately 60-70 firms. Forum attendees included CEOs of major Ukrainian Internet service providers, registrars, telecom operators, suppliers of telecom equipment, as well as representatives of legislative and executive authorities of Ukraine.

The conference was traditionally conducted in the roundtable format and featured the flowing key topics: the effective use of ICT solutions as a tool to overcome crisis phenomena in the economy, prospects of implementation and use of new technologies in the information and communication area, crucial issues facing further development of UA. domain zone, cybercrime and safety on the Web.

Oleksandr Mamunya, the official legal expert of the UIA lawyers committee, gave a presentation on intellectual property issues in the Internet focusing on the protection of market players’ interests in this regard. His presentation was eagerly awaited long before the beginning of the conference, since the topic was of current interest for many members of the Association. The lively discussion that followed demonstrated that the area of legal regulation of intellectual property in the Internet and of relationships between telecom industry players is marked by many contradictions and inconsistencies, and like any other closed market it has its own pitfalls and unspoken rules.

“This, in turn, gives us a stimulus to become even more proactive within the Ukrainian Internet Association and appropriate committees of other associations, so that we can make our professional contribution to founding and sustaining a legal framework in the industry. Everyone admits the need for new civilized methods of work. However, migrating to new standards is never easy and, for this reason, many market players are often not enthusiastic about adopting them,” - said Oleksandr Mamunya.

“Participation in similar events and discussing areas of concern in Ukrainian business is a powerful tool to plan future activities of firm practice groups in a given area and serves as a good incentive to promote new business lines,” - added Oleksiy Filatov, Head of Vasil Kisil & Partners IP Practice Group.
