Contemplating The Future of the Legal Profession in Ukraine

On June 23, 2009, as part of the joint program created by the European Commission and the Council of Europe “Transparency and Efficiency of the Judicial System in Ukraine” the conference “The Future of the Legal Profession in Ukraine” took place.
The conference was attended by representatives of the Council of Europe, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the Higher Qualification Board of the Bar and Legal Public Organizations, the Ukrainian Bar Association, the Ukrainian Lawyers’ Association, the Union of Ukrainian Advocates, and the Union of Lawyers of Ukraine.
Speakers of the event discussed the principal avenues for reforming the legal profession in Ukraine, with a particular focus on key issues of regulating the Bar institution and on relevant legal solutions. Experts of the Council of Europe shared the European practices and standards in organizing the Bar.
According to Oleg Makarov, Managing Partner with Vasil Kisil & Partners, “In the interaction between lawyers and attorneys there is no place for entrepreneurial attributes and employment contracts.”
