EBA facilitates productive dialogue by gathering heads of largest banks and Vasil Kisil & Partners’ senior representatives at the Banking Round Table

April 3, 2009 Kyiv: Responding to challenging times facing the Ukrainian and global financial markets, the European Business Association held the Banking Round Table the main purpose of which was to discuss recent developments in the banking sector. Guest speakers included presidents of leading banks: Mr. Hans Grisel of ING Ukraine WB, Mr. Volodymyr Lavrenchuk of Raiffeisen Bank Aval and Mr. Dmytro Zinkov of OTP Bank and Vasil Kisil & Partners’ Managing Partner, Mr. Oleg Makarov, Head of Banking & Finance Practice Mr. Denis Lysenko and Ms. Yulia Kyrpa, Senior Associate.
Among the burning issues that were raised throughout the discussion, the following topics gathered most of the attention: the state of affairs on the Ukrainian currency market and the available financial instruments to hedge currency risk, the various approaches used by banks to restructure the credit portfolio and the possibility of “selling” troublesome loans to specialized companies.
Mr. Makarov also raised the issue of “orderly” bankruptcy, as one of the viable options some companies are bound to face and stressed that in certain situations it may be the best way of handling a struggling business.
