Mr. Oleksandr Mamunya, Senior Associate with Vasil Kisil & Partners, speaking on the Internet protection of intellectual property rights at the Fifth Congress “Ukraine on the Way towards the Information Society”

The fifth and anniversary Congress “Ukraine on the Way towards the Information Society” was held on February 13, 2009 in the Ukrainian House (Kyiv) with the main purpose to find out how to develop domestic IT market in times of economic turmoil.

A congress of the Ukrainian Internet Association is a prominent event for the Ukrainian market of information and telecommunication technologies. The Congress was attended by the key players of Ukrainian telecommunication market such as representatives from dedicated committees of the Verkhovna Rada, respective ministries and other structures of the Cabinet of Ministers, Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine, National Commission for Communications Regulation, National Television & Radio Broadcasting Council, representatives of Ukrtelecom OJCS and private companies active in telecommunications, managers of dedicated associations and law firms.

Such urgent issues as further development of IT market were discussed at the Congress. The discussion touched upon the current status of Ukrainian IT market and perspectives of its this year development, specific nature of legal support for IT in the period of economic instability, use of Internet technologies for improving business processes, arrangements for implementing provisions of the Concept for Telecommunications Development in Ukraine, ways to resolve urgent issues related to development of the .UA domain zone and ways to develop efficiently digital television in Ukraine in terms of the current situation in the industry, etc.

The senior associate with Vasil Kisil & Partners and expert in intellectual property related to telecommunications Mr. Oleksandr Mamunya reported on such topic as “Protection of Intellectual Property Rights in the Internet.” In his opinion, based on significant experience the law firm has in relation to operating in this field, the current legal base of this industry is insufficient and, mostly, inconsistent with the existing realities, and thus prevents investing into the economy of Ukraine. As it was summarized by the reporter, the legal regulation of the industry should be improved considering the above mentioned.
