On April 9-10, 2009 the 5th annual Legal Business in Russia conference organized by “Vedomosti” newspaper took place in Moscow (Russia).

How do companies from the legal sector manage to adapt to the new terms dictated by the financial crisis? What kind of managerial and HR decisions are being made? What changes are happening regarding the terms and conditions of working with clients? Which stereotypes should be rejected? What opportunities are emerging and how should they be used? These were the key issues that boggled the minds of conference presenters and attendees this year.

To help find the answers conference organizers specifically invited to speak those law firm managing partners whose reputation among their colleagues is associated with an unconventional approach towards business management solutions as well as to creation and development of new competences critically important for a successful firm. Traditionally, Vasil Kisil & Partners was represented by its Managing Partner Oleg Makarov.

The first day of the conference was devoted to the development of the Russian legal services market, competition and cooperation between Russian and foreign law firms. The next day conference participants discussed tax compliance matters, corporate and anti-trust law.

Oleg Makarov made a presentation on the first day of the conference during a roundtable discussion entitled “Should we expect a change of priorities from law firm clients?” and stressed the fact that the world did change, but we are still living in a free market environment, and therefore the market shapes the demand. “Do we need to respond to changes in the economic situation by adjusting the supply? – Most certainly. The era of spillovers and law firm glamour has passed. The priorities of today are knowledge, dedication and clear understanding of client needs, as well as consistency, commitment and result-oriented approach”, - he added. Mr. Makarov further expanded on the changes in the relationship between internal (corporate) and outside council and encouraged to implement the win-win model as the most efficient and mutually beneficial choice.
