25/02/2009

KYIV, February 20, 2009. The Ukrainian Bar Association (UBA) held the 5th Ukrainian legal forum “The Development of the Ukrainian Legal Services Market in 2009”. The forum was opened by a welcome from Vasil I. Kisil, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the UBA, Sergiy Konnov, the President of the UBA, and Oleg Makarov, the Member of the Management Board of the UBA and Organizational Committee Chairman, who, according to many speakers, suggested the majority of hot topics to be highlighted by the experts of Ukrainian legal business during their 20-minute presentations.

Logically so the issues of organizing work in the worsening economic environment of Ukraine and in the world garnered the most attention of the legal community, and, in particular, managers of law firms and bar associations.

The issue of developing legal business was viewed in terms of four aspects, such as the prospects of 2009: survival or development, analysis of successful patterns of partnership in the modern legal practice, what is a client and how to retain him, as well as the search for new risk management strategies given the new developments.

Besides the well-known leaders on the Ukrainian legal arena, the list of speakers included representatives from Russia and Europe. In particular, Stephen R.N. Denyer, a partner of Allen & Overy, one of the world’s biggest law firms, for 30 years and a recognized authority in the area of law firm development, provided an outline of global trends now emerging in the legal business. Ilya Nikiforov, a partner of the renowned Russian law firm Egorov, Puginsky, Afanasiev & Partners, enthused the listeners with his out-of-the-box approach. His presentation and the so-called “anti-tips” on how to retain a fickle client were extremely well received and entertained the audience. According to the post-conference surveys completed by the attendees, one of the most interesting presentations was made by a Senior Partner of a Russian law firm “ALRUD” Mr. Vasilyi Rudomino. Mr. Rudomino talked about developing lawyers’ professional competencies and tried to answer the difficult question – are we raising a partner or a competitor?

During the session dedicated to building successful partnership models Oleg Makarov, Managing Partner of Vasil Kisil & Partners Law Firm, shared his know-how with the forum’s attendees, presenting a legal business frame of reference and how the partnership fits into it. This novel practice had been already highly praised by the peers when Mr. Makarov spoke on numerous forums in Russia and other CIS countries last year. All members of this session’s presenter panel agreed, that all law firms should consider adopting the frame of reference as a truly effective model.
