18/05/2009

The 2nd annual debates on civil law of Ukraine organized by Student Scientific Law Society “SCHOLARIS” were held on May 16, 2009 at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (NaUKMA).

Conducting mock court proceedings for training purposes is one of the core elements of the educational process used by leading European and other universities of the world. During these debates, law students of higher educational institutions share their experience, acquire practical skills in the area courtroom discourse and learn how to conduct court hearings in circumstances that are as close to reality as possible.

In the western tradition, practicing lawyers representing the most reputed domestic law firms usually act as judges. They, in return, are able to evaluate the level of students’ qualifications and offer them further employment. This year, Mr. Andriy Stelmachshuk, a former student of NaUKMA who is currently a senior associate with Vasil Kisil & Partners and a renowned expert in civil law and litigation of Ukraine, has been invited to sit in the panel of judges.

This year six teams from Lviv, Kharkiv, Ternopil, Khmelnytskyi and Kyiv competed to become “the best team”. The final round took place after qualifying games in two groups after which the winner was announced. As the contest came to its end its participants were invited to partake in an interesting excursion into the Academy finalized by a grand award ceremony and a musical performance.
