On March 9-11, 2009, the 5th Annual Ukrainian Investment Summit organized by Adam Smith Conferences was held in London. Vasil Kisil & Partners Law Firm was among the traditional sponsors of the event. The delegation of Vasil Kisil & Partners included Oleg Makarov, Managing Partner, as well as firm’s partners Oleg Alyoshin, Oleksiy Filatov, Denis Lysenko and Tatyana Sabitova, PR Executive.

Even though the economic downturn caused a substantial reduction attendee numbers (there were three times fewer people than last year), in terms of quality, it was still a top-notch event which covered a comprehensive range of macroeconomic issues and provided valuable insight into the prospects for direct foreign investment (FDI) in Ukraine.

The participants of the summit expressed an extraordinary interest in the report delivered by Oleg Alyoshin highlighting the effective laws regulating public and private partnerships and new opportunities opened up by the newly adopted law “On Concessions for the Construction and Operation of Motor Roads” in whose development Vasil Kisil & Partners Law Firm played a key role. Mr. Alyoshin in simple terms gave an overview of the ways in which concessions can be implemented in Ukraine when undertaking infrastructure projects. He further described which restrictions were lifted and what new sources of income for a concessioner are now stipulated by the new law.

Denys Lysenko moderated the session “In Focus: The Fastest Growing Companies of Ukraine”, during which the CEOs of well-known companies (Kraft Foods Ukraine, Alseeds Group, Halnaftogaz and Astelit) shared their positive experience of how they manage to stay on the development track regardless of global crisis and expressed optimistic expectations of growth in such economic sectors as agriculture, food, telecommunications and power.

A jazz party hosted by Vasil Kisil & Partners and Ashurst law firms was the highlight of the second conference day. As Zhenya Strigalev’s Jazz Quartet, a famous figure on London music scene, created special relaxed party atmosphere, the executives of major companies, investors, bankers, governmental representatives including Deputy Chairman of the State Property Fund of Ukraine Alexander Potimkov and his spouse, heads of public organizations (Jorge Zukovski, President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine, Morgan Williams, USUBC President, Richard Spring, Chairman of the British Ukrainian Society and UK Member of Parliament) enjoyed informal conversations. In his welcoming address, Oleg Makarov, Managing Partner of Vasil Kisil & Partners, told the guests to stay optimistic and said: “Today the market winner is the one who can respond quickly and is capable of making decisions just in the very nick of time.”
